Oil on Canvas
Jean Leon Gerome Ferris
Betsy Ross, 1777 is an oil on canvas by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863- 1930). This painting is one in a series of 78 paintings by Ferris that he called “Pageant of a Nation,” depicting significant events in the founding of America. Here, Betsy Ross is showing Major Ross and Robert Morris how she cuts the stars for the American flag, while George Washington sits in a chair on the left, seemingly amused by Betsy Ross’ little daughter.
