Oil on Canvas, 1796
Gilbert Stuart
Washington sat for Stuart in Philadelphia between 1795 and 1796, resulting in three distinctive images: the “Vaughan” type; the Athenaeum” Head, (the image on the dollar bill); and the Lansdowne Portrait, named for the Marquise of Lansdowne, British Prime Minister who was given the work. Due to a high demand, Stuart painted many copies. The original Lansdowne Portrait is now at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
